Weird, it’s Cold

imageListen, I love summer as much as the next guy. Maybe more. No, definitely more than the next guy. He doesn’t understand and appreciate summer the way that I do. Summer and I just click, you know? I dream of Bob Marley and refreshing adult beverages and gardening and sun kissed skin and …. Okay, I got lost in a day dream for a second.

My point is- it’s February. It’s Chicago. It’s cold. Too cold for my liking? Yes. But, the funny thing about Mother Nature is that she gives zero shits about what I think. And, resisting it, complaining about it, suffering over it, is not going to change anything. It is going to get warm when it gets warm. We can’t change the situation but we can change our relationship or reaction to it.

You know how time flies when you are having fun? And, conversely how it crawls when you are miserable? The more you focus on this misery, the slower the time goes. So, what can we do about it?

– Focus on how the weather forces us to take a break (and that is a good thing). We are all so go-go-go all the time. We work too hard. It is -27 with the wind chill. Brew a cup of tea and open a book. Put on Frozen (again) for your kids and take a bath.

– Focus on the things that you normally don’t have time for. I HATE cleaning in the summer. In fact, when my husband mentions cleaning between June and September I just tell him “We don’t need to clean, just go outside”. So, use this time to organize and de-clutter. The less junk you have, the less you have to clean. Deep clean now, so that you can enjoy your spring.

– Focus on yourself. Before our lives get busy with t-ball and summer camp and weddings and pool outings, use this time to do a little soul searching. Are you happy? Do you like your job? Are you taking care of your health? Is it time to pick up a new hobby? I am using this time to focus on my business. I am doing the work now, so that I won’t feel bad taking some days off when I can enjoy them most.

– Focus on your fitness. Hit the gym! What else are you going to do?! It will warm you up, it will boost your immune system, and it will improve your mood. This is the time of year when people get depressed. Stop the blues in their tracks by breaking a sweat 3-4 times a week.

– Focus on healthy food and meal prep. Now is the time to use that crock pot, roast that chicken, make 8 gallons of chicken soup and stick it in the freezer. Go through all of those cook books collecting dust on your book shelf and try something new. Double and triple the recipes and freeze the left-overs. Your March and April self will appreciate it.

February is practically over. March is a wildcard, but usually better than February. Next thing you know it will be my birthday (April) and it’s all down hill from there. Until then, you can find me in my living room watching Revenge on Netflix. (Party at my house in June! Think bags, and sunshine, and coolers, and sandals, and summer dresses, and flowers, and happy kids with slightly drunk parents.)

IMG_1835Okay ladies, let’s talk. Just a quick little chat. I think it’s time to cool it with the posing in the pictures. Not every pic on your smart phone needs to be a red-carpet moment. You know what I mean: hand on hip, arms away from the body for slimming, chin down, sexy eyes, shot from above, etc. This pose is the new duck face in my opinion. Is it more flattering? Yes! Is it slimming? Yes! Do you need to pose like that for the picture with your 2 year old? No. Do you need to be ‘hot’ in a picture with your kids (or grandma or fish tank)? There is a time and a place for posing: date night, girls night out, weddings, etc. First day of school at the bus stop? Please god no.

My favorite pictures of me have always been spontaneous. I love pictures where I am laughing- mouth wide open- and looking away. I love pictures where I might not being wearing makeup but I am having fun with my kids. I love pics that are great memories, even if I don’t look skinny. You know why? Because there is not a secret Hot Mom contest. And, if there was, I am sure I would not win. If there was, I would not participate. If there was, shame on anyone who would judge it. I take pride in my appearance, and I take care of my health, but not so I can be photogenic for strangers on the internet. Because I like to feel confident. Because I like when my body can do what I ask of it (like sub for a volley ball game or run a couple miles or dance the night away).

I am not perfect. I am guilty of the ‘let me see it’ as soon as the flash fades. I am guilty of ‘put a filter on that so I look younger’. I am guilty of the ‘do it again, I don’t like my face’. But, I am going to work on that. I would really hate for my daughter to look at a picture I took of her perfect little self and say that she doesn’t like her face. That is about the saddest thing I can think of. Let’s just go back to having fun and capturing moments. That’s what pictures are for.

Ever since starting with Shaklee vitamins, I feel like I need to shout it from the rooftops! I have talked to anyone that will listen to me simply because I feel like the world NEEDS to know what healthy can feel like. But, today I am coming down from the roof top, stepping off my soap box, and putting down the mega phone. I am only going to talk about the everyday products that you are all already purchasing, and showing you the Shaklee alternative.

Why would you want to switch? Well, there are lots of reasons but the big ones are:

1. Shaklee is always safe: We are proud to be non-toxic! The products don’t give off harmful fumes, they are safe to be used around children and pets. I WISH I knew about this stuff when I was wiping down high chairs and had babies crawling on the floor and putting everything in their mouths!

2. Shaklee is always green: Shaklee was the first in the world (!) to become climate neutral. That means, if you factor in everything- corporate headquarters, shipping, packaging, etc.- they leave no carbon footprint. The cleaners are biodegrable, recyclable, concentrated to save on packaging, etc. They are no joke!

3. Shaklee will save you money: This one might surprise people. Some of you have looked at the prices and there might have been a little sticker shock. But, what you need to factor in is how long this stuff will last. A bottle of basic H2 costs $12 for non-members and will last the average person a year. It completely replaces all purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, and window cleaner (and more) for a whole year! For $12 bucks!

4. Shaklee always works: Some of you might be thinking- I don’t care how good it is for the planet if it doesn’t work as well as my…. tide or windex or whatever you are using. The crazy thing is that it does work as well. I actually prefer these cleaners and other beauty products to everything I have ever used.

All Purpose Cleaner and Window Cleaner:
I already mentioned the basic H2 cleaner. It is magical and it does everything. It saves you a ton of money. It’s a no brainer. It is so concentrated that 2 drops is all it takes to make a 16oz bottle of window cleaner.

Laundry Products:
This was the one that I was most skeptical of. I loved my old stuff. I loved getting lavender scented dryer sheets and the fabric softener with the cute bear. But, the more I read about how bad those are for your home environment, the more willing I was to give the Shaklee stuff a shot. They have a liquid or powder detergent, a fabric softener, a stain booster, and dryer sheets (that can be recycled after you use them (!). I now use these products exclusively. They last forever and my clothes are truly clean and fresh smelling.

Dish and Hand:
The dishwasher detergent was the first time I thought- they have got to be kidding me! It not only cleaned my dishes, it cleaned my dishwasher! I wish I would have gotten a before/after pic but I never thought in a million years it would clean my old skuzzy dishwasher. This stuff lasts forever too! I opened this bag on 11/13/14 and it is still going strong today 2/13/15. We have a family of 4 and run our dishwasher every.single.day. They also make an amazing dish soap for the sink and a great regular hand wash soap.

Shower:
I use the Prosante Shampoo and Conditioner for my hair and the Enfuselle body wash and face wash for my skin. Again, it’s just another way to get the excess chemicals and harmful ingredients out of our lives. And the teeniest bit goes a long way, you only need a dab.

Skin care:
I also use the Enfuselle moisturizers and Shaklee antiperspirant cream. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and probably the organ we abuse the most (besides our livers). The C and E repair cream in the picture makes your skin feel like silk. It’s insane.

I spent months slowly replacing all of my old products. Whenever I would run out of something, I would just replace it with the Shaklee version. So this didn’t happen over night. And now, to save money, I just do a quick inventory at the end of the month. I see what I am going to need and order it all at once to save money on shipping.
